Evesham’s Own Masterchef Professional

Chef Jamie Barnett in the produce gardens of De Montforts Restaurant

With the BBC TV Masterchef the Professionals series well under way, with top chefs from across the UK, including the Midlands, fighting for survival to be crowned BBC Professional Masterchef 2011, Evesham can boasts its own finalist.

Meet Jamie Barnett, a 27 year old chef with a passion for traditional English cooking.  You’ll find him busy at the stove at one of Worcestershire’s newer fine dining restaurants, the De Montfort, set beside the river Avon at Offenham, in the heart of the Vale of Evesham.

A quarter finalist in the past series of BBC ‘Master Chef – The Professionals’, “I can sympathise with the chefs on this series of Masterchef – It is a really high pressure competition, with Gregg Wallace and Michel Roux really putting us through our paces – It was a real honor to be included in 2009’s competition, and work with the likes of Michel, as well as my fellow competitors, and I learnt a great deal” Jamie comments “You have to be able to handle high pressure, at this level of cheffing, and the day to day job is of no exception. We have demanding customers who travel from all over the county, and beyond, but doing a lunch service or busy evening is no different, you can’t take your eye of the ball, or plate – to ensure every dish is as good as or better than the last”. Viewers saw last week how easy it ewas to fail the judges, when Shropshire Chef Chris Conde of the Inn at Grinshill crashed out.

Jamie is in his element among all the excellent produce in the Vale of Evesham, including local fruit, vegetables and meat.  He knows that great cooking comes from using the best, local fresh ingredients and his natural creative instincts are always working away developing, adapting or improving recipes so that their fresh flavours shine through.  In his spare time – and hard working chefs get precious little of that – Jamie is busy writing his own book on Traditional English Cuisine, but of course with that individual twist that is so indicative of his own exceptional skills.

Jamie has worked for many years in the region,  as chef de partie at Russell’s of Broadway, and a stint at the Lygon Arms as well as three years at Lucknam Park the Michelin starred restaurant near Bath, the magnificent Bath Spa Hotel. Diners with a sweet tooth will enjoy the fact that he also spent nine months working as a chocolatier!

De Montforts owners Chris Sweet and Celia Perrin who took over the property Spring 2010 have extensively refurbished the interior spending over £100k of family money improving the property, and invested in new kitchen, and bar and gardens, and creating new jobs, culminating in a re-naming from the “Fish and Anchor” now to ‘De Montforts Country Pub and Restaurant’, to reflect the local heritage and history of the venue.

Celia Perrin commented today ”Jamie is a real genius in the kitchen, the customers love his slant on traditional cuisine, and the way he sues the wonderful local produce we have in the Vale is exemplary – to us and our customers he is a real Master Chef.”
