Glynn Purnell’s Michelin-starred Birmingham restaurant has been awarded the coveted BMW Square Meal Best UK Restaurant Award 2012.

Purnell’s opened in 2007 and is the first solo venture from the chef. Appropriately, the BMW accolade has been awarded to the restaurant on the eve of its fifth anniversary of opening.  Glynn Purnell said. “To receive this accolade now is an honour for myself and my team. What makes it even more poignant is that we are due to celebrate our fifth year of business; we opened the doors on July 7th, 2007 at 7pm.

“To win such a coveted award doesn’t mean restaurateurs should become complacent. I can honestly say I love the job I do on a daily basis. I am in a fortunate position right now but it hasn’t been easy, I have got here through sheer hard work and determination.
“I’m driven by my passion to be able to excite people through food, especially the innovative dishes inspired by my childhood.”
There was close competition for this year’s award from other highly-rated UK restaurants including Simon Rogan’s L’Enclume, Sat Bains’ Nottingham restaurant and Nathan Outlaw’s fine-dining outfit in Cornwall. The shortlist of the 50 top UK restaurants for 2012 can be read in Square Meal’s Summer magazine, which is out now.
Square Meal’s editor Ben McCormack presented the BMW award to Purnell and his team at the West Midlands restaurant. ‘Glynn Purnell more than anyone has put Birmingham on the culinary map,’ he said in a speech. ‘He thoroughly deserves this award.’  After training with top chefs including Gordon Ramsay, Gary Rhodes and Claude Bosi, Purnell worked as head chef at Jessica’s, which was awarded Birmingham’s first Michelin star back in 2005.

He is now the proud owner of three establishments in Birmingham, Ginger’s Bar and The Asquith launched in 2011. More recently, he has appeared on Great British Menu, at the BBC Good Food Show and is a regular guest chef on Saturday Kitchen with James Martin.

The BMW Square Meal Best UK Restaurant award considers all restaurants outside of the M25. This is the 12th year the BMW Square Meal UK award has been awarded, with past winners including The Kitchin, The Fat Duck and Le Manoir aux Quat’ Saisons.
