Chinese Restaurant Expands only weeks after investing over £500K in Kidderminster

Worcestershire’s newest restaurant which opened in September is due expand following demand from customers.

China Lodge Oriental Restaurant which opened its doors to the public in the Summer following an extensive rebuild over two years, converting what was once the old Prince Albert Pub, has now needed to expand its number of dining covers, due to demand.

With no expense spared on furnishings prior to launch, and over 80 covers installed in the restaurant, they have now had to add a further 30 seats to accommodate the demands from customers, travelling from far and wide. Owner Tom Lau commented “We have spent many years planning China Lodge but despite all our efforts, we were nt sure how customers were going to receive it, but we have been re-assured by the overwhelming demand, with the phone ringing off the hook. We have been booked up three weeks in advance, and many customers were disappointed that they could not get in to enjoy our cuisine, so we have extended dining into the cosy bar area, with its listed Victorian stained glass windows, and asked for another 30 chairs to be made by our Telford bespoke supplier The chair People, who rushed the order through, and supplied us with extra tables alongside the chairs order – customers can now get in during busy sessions”

New jobs – the restaurant had been employing many local companies to help with the build, and more recently recruiting new staff as part of the expansion to work in the large kitchens with Chef Wendy, and front of house “The standards of staff coming for interviews has been really high, and we have now trained over 20 new part and full time staff since the opening.

Owners Tom and wife Chef Wendy Lau, who successfully operated the China Diner restaurant in Bridgnorth for over seven years, applied Tom’s passions for restaurants to the new China Diner. He began many years ago from watching his father chef in Hong Kong, then when moving to the UK him and his family have been successful restaurateurs ever since. – “We always wanted a bigger restaurant” commented Tom “when I saw the site of the old derelict pub on the Bewdley Road, I thought it the perfect location to realise our dream. It has been a labour of love, and took longer than we hoped, with much of the old building having to be demolished and rebuilt, whilst retaining the beautiful original Victorian stained glass windows to the front of the bar, but we are delighted with the results, and the feedback has been very encouraging since the opening. We now look forward to a very busy Christmas with parties already booking their meals with us, set to enjoy a Christmas meal with a difference”

The menus bring together Tom’s passions to constantly improve dishes and flavours and Chef Wendy’s experiences in Chinese, and Cantonese foods over 20 years, specialising in traditional dishes from across the regions of China, including popular spicy Szechuan dishes and those from Tom’s childhood home of Hong Kong. They also be provide Thai dishes, and daily specials of fish, pork and local beef dishes. Chef Wendy commented “I make everything from fresh. Due to the freshness of Asian cuisine, and the speed we cook it, fresh from order, we are also very popular for busy business people who are able to dine, and return to their offices within the hour – revitalised after eating a healthy light lunch – the mainstay of Chinese culture. The bar serves light bites, and the restaurant a full extensive menu, with many specials carried from the China Diner, and updated to reflect the new contemporary setting of China Lodge. Wendy added “Families are also welcome early on with lots of sharing dishes, and we can help any new diner to the Asian cuisine with advise and adapting dishes to suit their particular taste – all are fresh, even our sauces, marinades and dressings we make ourselves.”
