A New Beginning for a Renowned Ludlow Food Destination

Henry and Hannah Mackley of Harp Lane

Henry and Hannah Mackley of Harp Lane

Deli on the Square has been a central part of the Ludlow food scene for many years and in just a few months it will be back on the scene – but this time as ‘Harp Lane’. Keys have just been passed to the new owners and plans are starting to unfold – to turn the well known delicatessen, into a thriving foodie hotspot for the town and surrounding area. The business has been on the market for over a year, so the news of its purchase and the fact that it will be remaining as a food destination, has been warmly welcomed by the town. Ludlow is a food haven with a national and international reputation and Harp Lane will soon be joining the many other recognised businesses in and around Ludlow.

Henry Mackley has bought the premises with his wife Hannah and two further silent partners. This strong team will be bringing about a major overhaul to create the new deli and dining room, due to open early this summer. They envisage the extensive refurbishment taking around three months to complete. Henry Mackley is from Shropshire and so understands the importance of the food culture to the county. Henry’s roots are firmly planted in Ludlow, having returned here seven years ago after time in London and the Welsh Marches, working in various food and marketing roles. Henry then co-managed the delicatessen and oversaw new product development at the award-winning Ludlow Food Centre. He will bring this experience, family food knowledge – his mother Lesley, is a Ludlow-based food writer and founding member of the Ludlow Food Festival – and enormous passion and enthusiasm together, to make this work for his family and the historic town of Ludlow.
Henry describes his mission for the new business; “Our focus at Harp Lane will be on supplying, creating and selling food and drink that makes our customers – and us, happy and excited. Harp Lane is to be an extension of our home – both in terms of the warmth and welcome and the quality of the food that we serve; every day will feel like a special occasion for our customers.”
Henry, Hannah and their new team aim to reinvigorate the dynamic food reputation of the town. “Ludlow is firmly on the food map and we need to retain this coveted position, by mixing a little of our rustic approach to real food – with a touch of style and sophistication. We hope that we can develop this feel at Harp Lane and look forward to welcoming our customers very soon.”
Harp Lane will still be a delicatessen, serving an excellent selection of food to take home and there will also be a small casual dining room developed above the shop, where homemade food is going to be served. An on-site kitchen is to be installed as part of the development project. Once a vibrant spot in the centre of Ludlow, will soon be thriving again – under the management and direction of this local foodie team.
