Guests were treated to an evening of gourmet creations by a local children’s nurse who has become a TV Chef and social media sensation in recent weeks.
James Sherwin of Shrewsbury was recently plucked from obscurity to feature in a new Channel 4 food show called ‘The Taste’ where domestic cooks and young Chefs are given the opportunity to impress Celebrity Chefs with just a spoon full of food, created purely for the taste – competing to survive just on what is on the spoon, on flavours alone. Judges include USA Chef and critic Anthony Bourdain, French Chef and star of his own restaurant in LA Ludo Lefebvre, and our very own Nigella Lawson who test their taste buds each week to identify the best of up to 15 contestants.

Our very own James Sherwin won the previous weeks competition beating all other competitors creating a ginger and black pepper rice pudding that was described by Nigella Lawson as “one of the best rice puddings” she had ever tasted. He was also topping the trending on twitter during last weeks show, where he sadly got pipped to the post in the final taste off, and left the competition. However, on Friday night the regions gourmands were treated to a sell-out pop-up meal for one night only at Shrewsbury’s stylish Coffee House where he created a 5 course tasting menu called ‘Smoking Game’ with a theme that everything was smoked throughout the meal. Dishes included Smoked quails eggs, (smoked) Doughnuts with (smoked garlic and beetroot) jam, venison with smoked Game Tea, and Pomegranate smoked white chocolate mousse with coffee and cardamon caviar.

“I created the menu some weeks back before the show started, i never realised what sort of media buzz The Taste would have created, resulting in a sell-out even, with a waiting list”
There was also a little help from some of the regions top producers who had been supporting James on “The Taste” – including Master Baker Robert Swift of Swifts Bakery in Ludlow who helped create the smoked Doughnuts, as well as the sourdough, and Julia Wenlock of Shrewsbury’s ‘Toots Sweet’ based in the Market Hall, who managed to source the speciality white chocolate for the dessert (pictured).
“I had heard of James on twitter” comments Robert Swift “then when he appealed on twitter for a good doughnut recipe, I had to get involved – his dishes and creations are so exciting, so it was an honour to work with him – the night was great fun and really inspiring – he really has some talent”.

Julia Wenlock of Toots Sweet added “being a Shrewsbury sensation, and a bit of a TV star it was a delight when james approached me to help him source the special white chocolate for the dessert, and when I tasted the entire dish on the night, i was really blown away with the flavours he had created. I cant wait until the next one.”
Guests on the night were also treated to the option of a ‘drinks matching’ for each course created by Shrewsbury Coffee House’s master mixologist Keaton Kendrick matching world wines, as well as special Pre-Prohibition beers, and lagers.
James Day of Shrewsbury based Leisure Marketing Midlands LTD who helped promote the event added “it was great to see a packed Coffee House with such a diverse group of passionate foodies from the region, including our own award winning producers, with some guests travelling from Birmingham just to try James’ creations, and they were not disappointed – he did an amazing job, and the menu rivalled many from top restaurants, he really is an up and coming talent with lots more to come in the next few weeks.”

James Sherwin concluded “friday was a wonderful evening – managing to sell out my first real pop-up event – everyone was so complimentary on the evening and I intend to keep learning and improving from feedback and ideas.” adding “It’s been an amazing journey being on The Taste, and the support from the people of Shropshire has been unbelievable, with literally hundreds of messages on twitter and my Facebook page – since the show, offers have been flooding in and I look forward to taking on new challenges in the coming weeks. I’d like to thank everyone for their support and kind words throughout the journey so far. “
