The Balcony Restaurant Selfridges

For the weary shopper, The Balcony Champagne Bar and Restaurant is a welcome retreat from the hustle and bustle of the Bullring. Located on the smart 3rd floor of Selfridges store, the interior is chic and modern with muted tones and feature lighting.

Seating is available around the gleaming cocktail bar or at one of the spacious tables in the main dining area. We visited late on a Friday afternoon with tired feet and hungry from all those calories burnt shopping! The atmosphere was a perfect mix of laid back, coupled with a nice end of week buzz with groups of friends enjoying a bottle of Champagne or Two.

We started with drinks, I opted for a “Size Zero” Cocktail which was a long and refreshing blend of vodka, watermelon juice, cucumber and cranberry, my guest chose a glass of Pinot Grigio. The drinks and wine selection is good, but the choice of Champagnes, especially by the glass, is excellent, a good choice of Rose Champagnes are also available by the glass.

After mulling over the menu, we opted for a seafood board to share. This arrived beautifully presented with vintage smoked salmon, smoked mackerel pate on crispy toast and individual prawn cocktails. Other sharing boards included a selection of charcuterie or a tempting cheese option all served with crusty bread. Individual choices included classic clam chowder, a selection of sliders and a club sandwich.

There is a good choice of main courses ranging from line caught monkfish, to chilli crab linguini and a classic cheeseburger. I chose the squid, feta and chorizo burger served with polenta chips whilst my guest couldn’t resist the 10oz Lake District rib eye served with fries and béarnaise sauce.
Both dishes were excellent, the squid burger was encased in a soft brioche bun with drop dead gorgeous, crispy polenta fries seasoned with rosemary. The steak was perfectly cooked and adorned with giant onion rings and the béarnaise sauce was velvety and rich and perfect for dunking the fries in!

We decided (after leaving) that Dessert had been a step too far, but the temptation of sticky toffee pudding generously served with a jug of rich toffee sauce and Snickerbocker Glory Sundae wasn’t to be missed.

So next time you are in Birmingham and need an hour or two away from the crowds, make sure you pop into The Gallery. Whether you fancy a cold glass of Champagne a Cocktail or Two (Cocktail Happy Hour 5-7pm each night) a juicy burger, a light salad or a 3 course meal you won’t be disappointed. The food is very reasonably priced, satisfying and presented with thought and care.

The staff are friendly and attentive with a good knowledge of the dishes and drinks. The Manager Alice who looked after us that afternoon, clearly enjoys her job and nothing was too much trouble. She inspired us to visit again, so it would be rude not to return to sample the slow cooked duck leg salad with soy and ginger and maybe a glass or two more of Champagne. A great value experience.
